In Memory of
James “Geoff”
Geoffrey Monk
February 2, 1954 – October 14, 2021
James Geoffrey “Geoff” Monk was a dedicated biologist who spent the first 18 years of his career saving the peregrine falcon from extinction. Geoff’s work with the Canadian Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, along with his Master’s Thesis research on the effects of DDT on peregrine falcon individuals, directly contributed to saving and restoring the peregrine falcon population in California. In 1992, Geoff took his vast wildlife biology experience and business acumen and established Monk & Associates, an environmental consulting firm in Walnut Creek, California, applying his biological expertise and integrity towards creating a sustainable future for all of California’s wildlife while allowing California’s population a chance to sustainably grow. He assisted housing developers, school districts, and pipeline companies in obtaining their agency permit approvals while ensuring that open space was preserved and maintained for all of California’s people and wildlife to enjoy.
Some of the open space preserves established under Geoff’s tenure include:
- American Canyon California red-legged frog Habitat and Wetland Preserve (City of American Canyon, Napa County),
- Brushy Peak Open Space Preserve (Livermore, Alameda County),
- Wetland Mitigation and Preserve Napa Commerce Center (City of American Canyon, Napa County),
- Vaquero Farms Wetland Preserve (Byron, east Contra Costa County)
